The Secretary
This style of writing is the first for me. I've never read something that was so explicit at times, but I believe in this case it worked to its advantage. I feel that if it wasn't so explicit, the story wouldn't have the affect on readers emotions. It allows the reader to feel emotions while reading. Mary Gaitskill's style of writing, to me, is very contemporary. In, The Secretary, it deals with a women who is put into a situation by her boss. You hear these stories often about how in some cases the boss takes advantage of women who work for them. I found myself thinking, what if that was me? What if my future boss put me into that type of situation? Having that type of style made it easy to get past the explicit language because I knew that it lead to something else. Now that I have a basic knowledge of whats to come from Gaitskill, Veronica should be interesting.

Good analysis on Gaitskill's exploration of the role of female sexuality in contemporary America.
